First launch of a Navstar Block 2R navigation satellite (20 are planned for launch) in
the Global Position System (GPS). Mass at launch: 2032 kg, on-station at the beginning of operations it would be 1075 kg.
Delta 2 (7925) vehicle suffered an anomaly in one of the strap-on boosters 12 seconds after launch
and the launch vehicle self-destructed 21 seconds after launch. This is the first failure of a Delta-2 launch
vehicle to place a payload into Earth orbit.
